Want a Christmas ornament to represent your family? Why not make one with your family’s fingerprints and create a salt dough fingerprint family tree ornament?
Firstly, you will need to make the dough.
Items needed for the salt dough recipe:
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup salt ***
- 1/2 cup warm water
*** I used table salt for this but you could totally use sea salt, too! I made sea salt dough ornaments and they were beautiful!
Pour flour & salt in a medium mixing bowl. Add warm water a little at a time and mix until it forms a dough.
Now, the dough is done. Time to make a Family Tree ornament!
Items needed to make a fingerprint Christmas tree ornament:
- Rolling pin
- Christmas tree cookie cutter or a knife
- Straw
- Paint
- Ribbon
- OPTIONAL: Rubber letter stamps/ink pad
Place the dough on a clean and flat surface. Use a rolling pin to make it flat and about 1/4 of an inch thin.
Use a Christmas tree cookie cutter or just cut the shape of a Christmas tree with a knife.
Make a hole at the top of the Christmas tree dough with a straw.
Have your family each press their index finger on the Christmas tree dough.
If you want your family’s last name on it, go ahead and use rubber letter stamps at this point.
Leave it out to air-dry (1-2 days).
If you prefer, you can put it in the oven at the lowest temperature for about 2 hours. Keep on checking the oven to make sure the dough does not crack or gets too dry. Flip the dough over halfway through.
Once it is completely dry, paint the fingerprints with each family member’s favorite colors and add the decorations.
I painted a string to connect all the fingerprints. Then tiny colorful ornaments, so the fingerprints look like big ornaments.
Put a ribbon through the hole and tie it into a bow.
Hang your personalized homemade salt dough fingerprint ornament up on the Christmas tree!

Did you make any Christmas ornaments to represent your family?

Haven’t done salt ornaments in years. You have encouraged me to start.
Great to hear! Hope you will enjoy making some.
Cool! I love DIY things like this that I will be able to make when my son is just a littler bit older. I did a footprint ornament when he was a baby and gave it to my mom last year – she cried! Would love to do this one for her as well!
Yes! I love handmade stuff from my daughter. So much love into it that money cannot buy.
This is really cute! Thanks for sharing 🙂
